Anytime you move house, leave home, say goodbye to parents, old flatmates or your old small town, it is essential to have a soundtrack prepared for moving day. It might be that you’re sad to be leaving, or alternatively you can’t wait to get out of there. This list contains the top ten songs for packing up and getting going.

10 “We Gotta Get Out of this Place” – The Animals

This is ideal if you hate where you live and can’t wait to get out of there and be free. The song, about two people who live in ‘this dirty old part of the city’ is perfect for getting you inspired for that big move.

9 “She’s Leaving Home” – The Beatles

On the other hand if you’re feeling a bit more melancholy about the move, what about this beautiful classic by the Beatles.

8 “Leaving Here” – The Birds

Here’s one with some real oomph to get you jumping around room with excitement about leaving. A rootin’ tootin’ gunslinger of a song.

7 “Leaving here” – The Who

Same song as above but covered by the Who. One of the few examples of a cover being better than the original.

6 “Born to Run” – Bruce Springsteen

The absolute classic song about moving away. The lyrics ‘Baby this town rips the bones from your back / It’s a death trap, it’s a suicide rap/ We gotta get out while we’re young/ cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run’ will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up every time.

5 “Going to California” – Led Zeppelin

The last five songs are for playing once you’re actually on the road. It’s irrelevant whether you’re on your way to Birmingham, Manchester or Ohio, this Led Zepp classic perfectly captures the thrill, nerves and anticipation of moving to a new place. 

4 “Movin’ on Up” – Primal Scream

One to get the party started in the car. Wind down the windows and scream this one out to the world.

3 “Keep on Moving” – Bob Marley

Another classic for a hot day with the sun down as you move on to your new home.

2 “Bright Side of the Road” – Van Morrison

try not to smile as you blast this one out with your old town in the rear view mirror and Van the Man in your ears.

1 “Hit the Road Jack” – Ray Charles

The all time classic song for leaving home. Press play on this track and you’ll find your feet and hands tapping and any melancholy thoughts you might have had about leaving will be long gone. Gorgeous song about hitting the road. Perfect.

  3. Im sorry you are so upset, moving out and going to college is supposed to be exciting and fun. Just remember you are leaving to better yourself and that your parents are always going to be there for you, even if they are far away.
