Say so long to your sarongs and sundresses ladies, the first official day of the Autumnal Equinox (aka: fall) is almost upon us, on Saturday, September 22nd to be exact. What does this mean for your wardrobe? It means that itís time to pack up your denim cutoffs, tank tops, bikinis and board shorts and put them in storage until next summer. It means that instead of baring it all, itís time to bundle it all up. Yes, it’s time to start scouting out the pieces that will keep you warm in stages, easy layers that will see you through the first batch of changing leaves to the very last snowfall. Here are the top five key layering pieces that will help you make a virtually seamless seasonal wardrobe transition in style.
1 The Sweater Dress
Comfy as a Grandpa sweater, form fitting the female figure like a glove, the Sweater Dress is a functional yet feminine, versatile yet classic staple. Look for basic crew neck, V-neck, turtleneck or cowl neck styles that will hug your curves and hit right above the knee. Wear it with bare legs and thigh high boots if you dare, textured tights, leggings or skinny jeans down below. Layer it over a long sleeved tee, turtleneck or button down to mix it up while adding some extra warmth, or as a base under an army jacket, puffer vest, denim jacket or winter coat for maximum coverage. p.s. Want a sweater dress with a little more sex appeal? Belt it baby.
2 The Long Cardigan
A dream match paired with denim, skinny cords or even a pencil skirt, the Long Cardigan always has your back, incorporating the coziness of a blanket minus the awkwardness of wearing a Snuggie. The open front will make you look longer and leaner while showing off a peek of pretty camis and tops underneath, and the toasty texture will make you feel like you’re nestled in front of a roaring fireplace with a hot cup of cocoa. Ski lodge chic, any day of the week.
3 The Loop Scarf
Next to a warm and wooly pair of tights, the Loop Scarf is my 2nd most favorite warm weather accessory. Itís versatile, itís easy to throw on, and most importantly, it will keep your neck warm and protected from the elements when you opt for anything with a scoop or V-neck. The Loop Scarf is the easiest way to incorporate some color, pattern and severe comfort into your fall lineups. Choose your favorite go-to texture with everything from silk and cotton to cable knit and crochet styles, and donít be afraid to experiment with different ways to loop it. Best of all? Iíll bet you a million smackers that your scarf wonít go out of style next season, unlike that muff you thought was oh so mod last year.
4 The Cropped Sweater
Baby it’s cold outside, but that doesnít mean you have to burden yourself with bulk in order to keep the chills at bay. Cropped sweaters are the hottest shape for the season, cool enough to sport solo and flexible enough to be layered under outerwear, over long sleeved tops, or both, all while showing off a well defined waist. Look for hi-low hems that make a flirty statement up front and a more dignified statement in back. Unlike that oversized Fisherman sweater you inherited from your Dad, your man wonít have the urge to steal borrow it.
5 The Moto Jacket
Whether you’re a goody two shoes kind of a girl or the ultimate girl gone wild, the Moto Jacket deserves a spot in every gal’s fall/winter wardrobe rotation. From clean, smooth and classic lines to studded/spiky accents and embellishments, youíll find cropped Moto Jackets cropping up in every color including neutral tans and pastels, Michael Jackson Thriller reds and basic blacks. No matter how you style it, this little outerwear gem will add some edge and ultra cool texture when layered with your everyday jean and t-shirt combos, plaid button downs, or thrown over a body con dress and boots for a look that is guaranteed to get his moto running.
