1 Reduce stress
A recent survey revealed that lack of organization in the home is a source of stress for 60% of Americans. Stress is a physical reaction to mental anxiety and is linked to all kinds of illnesses. For instance, stress causes heart problems and depression. Stress can even cause you to lose your hair because it triggers your autoimmune system, causing it to attack your own hair follicles. When you go home and find that it’s a messy, disorganized environment, you naturally experience stress rather than peace and calm. The same is true for the office. If your files are in a shambles, you’re likely to feel a certain level of anxiousness. Getting both the home and office organized cuts down significantly on stress.
2 Increase Productivity
According to Newsweek (06/09), “The average American burns 55 minutes a day, roughly 12 weeks per year, looking for things they know they own but can’t find.” Looking for items amidst piles of clutter is an unproductive use of time. A lot more can be accomplished in any setting if everything is in its place. One element of productivity is the ability to concentrate, and it’s tough to focus when you’re surrounded by clutter. Also, the stress caused by disorganization can cause illness, and illness can lead to sick days, which means lost productivity and our next point, which is that disorganization can mean loss of money.
3 Save money
If you pile mail in different places rather than organizing it, you can end up with late payments on your bills, which means additional charges. If your kitchen is disorganized, items can expire without being used. It’s not unusual to have to replace items you’ve already purchased because you simply can’t locate them in your disorganized home. If your business lacks order, you can lose money by failing to bill clients. Lack of planning can waste time and money.
4 Enjoy more leisure or recreation time
One of the best benefits of getting everything organized is that you end up with more time for leisure activities. It’s important to incorporate leisure into our lives rather than doing nothing but work, work, work. Leisure activities refresh and de-stress the mind and renew a positive source of energy. Your choice of leisure activity can be active or low-key, as long as it connects you with what you enjoy. Get organized so you’re free to read a book, take a dance class, go fishing, sew, surf, play basketball, write, listen to music, go rock climbing, or paint a picture. Just be sure to enjoy the leisure activity you really wish you could do more of with your time.
5 Enjoy peace of mind
If you walk into a room in your home and it’s messy and disorganized, you probably experience stress and perhaps even guilt for failing to maintain a pleasant living space. Walking into an organized room, on the other hand, promotes relaxation and peace of mind.
