6Know the sports
There is not a single country which is not proud of their sportsmen and women. Of course, not every nation is crazy about football (although, most of them are), but each has their own sports heroes. For example, if you go to Serbia and talk about their football players, people will like you, but, if you mention Novak Djokovic and start talking about him, then you will definitely hit the hotspot of their interests. The same goes for other countries as well.
7Music is important
Getting familiar with the local music is also very important. It will give you a topic to discuss with the locals. You can get their idea of the music, because not everyone likes what is popular in their country and, perhaps, you will receive some of the more interesting bands or singers to hear. All in all, take a YouTube tour of the target country’s music and you should be fine.
8Know the geography of the country
This is important for a few reasons. First of all, it will provide you with a nice topic to talk with the locals. You will also amaze them because you took the time to find something out about their country. I am always glad when a foreigner comes to my country and knows the landmarks, because I, as a resident of the country, am very proud of my country’s beauties. Also, it will help you on your trip, because you will know where you want to go, what you want to visit and, also, where you are at the moment. Should you fail to do this, you will be constantly wondering: “Where the hell am I?”
9Politics
If you come from the US, you can be sure that a lot of people know what is going on politically in your country. If you are from Australia, well, you do not get as much spotlight, because of your American brethren. Anyhow, taking some time to get acquainted with the political situation in the target country will certainly help you. Once again, it is a nice topic and you can get into friendly debates with the locals and you might even learn something new. Also, you will know about the political situation. In some countries, it is best to keep your mouth shut because of the situation and you should know how to act. Whatever your reasons, be sure to get informed from more than one source. Listening only to CNN can even get you into some unwanted and unnecessary trouble.
10Know the food
Every country has a cuisine that it boasts with. Literally, every country. Some of the local dishes may seem really awkward and disgusting to you, so you should get acquainted with it before you go, or it may happen that you get sick just by looking at what has been brought to you when you have ordered ‘the finest local cuisine’. Getting acquainted will also tell you specifically what to try and where to try it. Also, ask the locals about where you can get a good local dish, as they will certainly know the best places, because they have the highest standards for their local foods.
So, before you have completely packed up for your dream travel around the globe to an exotic place, make sure that you know a bit more about it than you think you should. Taking the time to prepare for the vacation and to get informed can only boost your experience and help you in more ways than one. So, my last words to you are: “Traveler, inform thyself!”
