<rant>

UPDATE MAY 4th, 2014 (something I need to get off my chest about Hostgator, which is no longer presented as #1 on this list): On Saturday, May 3rd 2014 I made the decision to finally ditch Hostgator after, what I now know, several years of struggle. I always took Hostgator’s “great service” for granted and always thought that any annoyances, problems and server issues were all my wrong-doing, simply because the sites weren’t setup properly. The impression with Hostgator was always that I got great help, but in the end I believe that all of the things that were advised were only in their own benefit. On Friday the 2nd of May Hostgator decided that AllYouNeedIsLists.com was eating up too many resources and closed the account for visitors without any prior warning. The website was down for about 12 hours before they reactivated it again after I made some (in their eyes) “necessary” changes (deactivating plugins, etc).

In retrospect I now realize that all this time that my websites were hosted at Hostgator I’ve been struggling to get any desired performance and still it was not enough. I had a Level 3 VPS (Virtual Private Server), on advice of the Hostgator support team because I was never satisfied with their shared hosting performance. I’ve given this VPS a try for exactly one year and concluded that it was even WORSE than the shared hosting so I got in discussion with their support again and finally merged several Shared and VPS accounts into one Reseller Account. Now the great thing about this was that the performance was better than before, but with major help of the W3 Total Cache plugin and a paid MaxCDN account (Content Delivery Network). I figured it just took some more investing from my side and was fairly happy with the results.

However, Hostgator didn’t seem to think I was making the right effort and being a solid and loyal “fan” of their services and support has no meaning whatsoever: this weekend they simply closed AllYouNeedIsLists on account of being too resource-heavy. This was the final push for me. I decided to finally move away from these guys and found my way to the great people of Media Temple (mt). The service and performance so far is jaw-dropping. I’ve never had AllYouNeedIsLists perform so well and there’s not even any additional Caching or CDN or CloudFlare service involved yet! It was all done in a breeze, their automatic migration service did all the work in a matter of hours, without any difficult settings or setup required from my side.

This is just something I needed to get off my chest, because what web host in their right mind justifies disabling an entire website without prior notice?! This cost me 12 hours of major agony, not to mention valuable AdSense revenue. And then I’m not even counting the several wasted years of being hosted there. I should have made this move long ago.

If you’re running a WordPress website, DO NOT host it at Hostgator. Find out which one of the great hosts in the list below fits your needs and you will certainly not be disappointed. Good luck!

</rant>

Today we’ll be looking into something that a million websites have discussed already, but it’s something I would like to present in an orderly fashion, without being all too biased.

Many people ask themselves questions like “How can I set up my own website?” or “How do I install WordPress?” or even “How can I make money with my website”? Although this single post does not address any of these questions, we will show you a list of companies to start with. After all, what is a website without a proper webhost?

We’re not necessarily talking about cheapest web hosting here, because that certainly does not prove a hosting provider to be of great quality.

Anyway, from bottom to top, here’s a list of the Top 5 best web hosting providers:

5WebFaction Hosting for developers

This means that each and every of their clients get the same basic power-setup with 100GB RAID-10 diskspace, 512MB application RAM easy installation of all kinds of tools (like WordPress, Drupal, but also Django, Ruby and so on), datacenters in USA, Amsterdam and Singapore and much more.

The basic hosting plan starts at the sweet price of $9.50/month and that should get you started with your awesome new websites. If you need more, you can upgrade your RAM, diskspace and bandwidth (basic plan offers 600GB/month so that’s a good start).

Before you order your portion of their server, try out the Free Trial so you can get the hang of things!

4Pagely Managed WordPress Hosting

Managed WordPress hosting means that the host takes care of WordPress installation, updates, security, backups and so on. All you have to do is set up an account and get cracking! Pagely’s Managed WordPress Hosting is a great solution if you’re a blogger who wants to quickly focus on writing content instead of first having to spend hours or even days and weeks to set everything up.

They’re not necessarily the cheapest, but they certainly know what they are doing when it comes to solid WordPress hosting. In their own words:

Wherever you hear companies talking about Managed WordPress Hosting, they are following our lead. Pagely was created in 2006 and relaunched in 2009. We are the largest and most trusted Managed WordPress Web hosting provider and have continued to push forward with new systems to make your experience better.

I guess that does mean something, considering WordPress is a very good blogging platform, but it is also quite resource-intensive. Pagely has the experience and know-how to provide a good hosting network, not only for beginning bloggers, but also for the larger scale websites.

These are the Pagely hosting plans:

-
Personal: $24/month

-
Business: $64/month

-
Enterprise: $149/month (Multisite support included)

Go have a look at Pagely’s benefits and features right away!

3WP Engine

If you need high speed, powerful and secure web hosting that does not let you down WP Engine can help you out. Although the pricing and plans they offer are pretty high compared to what you may be used to, but they make up for that in a great hosting experience.

The first plan in their web hosting gamma starts at $29.00/month and is only suitable for one site. If you run multiple websites, their second plan ($99.00/month) is the one you need which includes CDN, multisite support and more.

By the way, WP Engine is being used by giants like AMD, Foursquare, HTC, New Relic and many more. Why not have a look right now?

2Synthesis Fast & Secure WordPress Hosting

Synthesis is a special kind of web hosting provider. They focus on the heavier WordPress websites or networks and is actually owned by the awesome creator of Copyblogger, Brian Clark.

Synthesis not only offers web hosting on a high-tech architecture, but believes in helping their clients by providing many nifty extras like marketing tools like Scribe (site optimization, on-page optimization, keyword research and so on) and monitoring.

The plans they offer are not for the faint of heart, but if you’re running a WordPress website that generates more than 1,000 pageviews per day then it is definitely worth checking out. After all, what is a great website without great page loading times?

It’s not the most expensive host, but the money you put it in will most likely be very well-spent if you make use of the many marketing tools. The Synthesis basic plan starts $27/month for a single site, $97/month if you want to host more.

1Media Temple Web Hosting

Personally I don’t have experience with this hosting provider, but I know many who do. The reactions from those people are simply great. Media Temple offers high speed servers, using the latest technology like SSD drives and Wordpress-optimized platforms. The support and security is supposed to be top-notch as well.</del>

These services do come at a price and this makes Media Temple or “(mt)” come in at a bit heavier pricing than what you may encounter elsewhere.</del>

UPDATE MAY 4th, 2014: As mentioned in the rant at the top of this post I have made the move from Hostgator towards Media Temple. This is one of the best choices I have made for AllYouNeedIsLists ever since I started in 2009.

Why? Simply because they deliver. They may not seem like a cheap host, compared to giants like Dreamhost, Hostgator and so on, but in the end it is all worth it (I’d say tenfold, but that’s just emotions speaking :)).

AYNILists is now running on their Premium WordPress Hosting plan for a good 2 hours and already it proves to be a great choice. The migration from Hostgator to Media Temple went virtually effortless. All I had to do was provide FTP and WP-ADMIN credentials for the “old” location and let the automatic migration do all the work. A few hours later everything (and I mean everything) was taken care of and all that was left for me to do was to change the domain’s nameservers to the new location. And VOILA! A blazing-fast, secure and solid website, hosted with a team of people that truly know what they’re talking about.

I’m happy Media Temple, you will be too.

These are the Media Temple hosting plans:

-
Grid – Shared Web Hosting: $20/month

-
Premium WordPress Hosting: $29/month

-
Powerful VPS Hosting: starting at $50/month (or $30 if you’re a developer and want to use command-line)

-
Dedicated Server: $2500/month

Other than that, they also offer domains for about $15/year, CDN (Content Delivery Network) starting at $20/month, SSL certificates at $75/year, moving services and more.

It’s worth checking out, go have a look!

Conclusion

Hopefully this list helps you get a sense of what is out there in terms of quality web hosting. Of course you can go cheap and look into (fairly good) hosts like BlueHost, DreamHost, GreenGeeks and so on, but working with WordPress definitely requires some extra attention. Wordpress is a very powerful, but also performance-intensive platform that can ask a lot from your hosting server when you finally get those higher amounts of visitors.

When you get to a point that your website generates more than 1,000 daily visitors, start thinking about whether or not your current host is the right one for you (or at least look into ways to upgrade), before your visitors start to get bored with your page loading times.
