[dropcap]S[/dropcap]ometimes even the word ‘diet’ brings on cravings for tasty, fat-filled, high calorie foods. If you are on a diet and find yourself wanting foods that aren’t included in said diet, there are a few substitutes that may help fight off unhealthy cravings.

1 Something salty

If you find that you are craving something salty, try eating a handful of cheese flavored rice cakes. Although there are some calories in them, having just a few may be enough to make your craving go away. Plus, it is much healthier then consuming a half a bag of overly salted potato chips. Low sodium rice cakes made from organic rice is a good choice.

2 Finger foods

To trick your appetite into thinking you are cheating on your diet, prepare different types of fingers foods and have them in the refrigerator, ready to be eaten when a craving hits. A good choice is baby carrot sticks. These can be eaten with a fat free salad dressing such as Ranch. Another good choice to use as a finger food is any type of raw, mixed vegetable tray, also served with a fat free dressing. Organic veggies are a safer and healthier choice as opposed to pre-packaged types.

3 Fresh Fruit

Having fresh fruit available in the kitchen is a great way to stave off hunger pangs. Once again, organic products are best, but any fruit will do as long as it is properly washed. Naturally sweet fruits such as plums, peaches and apples can curb your sweet tooth, plus provide vitamins and nutrients. Making sure you get enough Vitamin C while on a diet is very important.

4 Plain water

Drinking plain water is always a good idea when dieting, but it can also be very boring. There are several new types of fruit flavored additives you can purchase that will help add some zing to the taste of water, without causing it to be full of calories. Be sure to read the ingredients label on these types of products before using them, to make sure they are safe. Filling up on liquids is yet another way to trick your body into thinking its full.

5 Yogurt

The fifth food to eat while dieting is yogurt. This can be eaten frozen, which tastes almost like ice cream, or in individual servings. Yogurt comes in nearly every flavor imaginable and is very healthy. It can be purchased in regular, low fat or fat free varieties. Plain vanilla yogurt can be topped with fruit, berries or granola, for extra taste.
