1 Nemo
The star of Pixar animation Finding Nemo, this little clown fish is a real cool guy. Although born with a special fin (a little bit smaller than considered normal), Nemo is an independent, courageous and determined fish who longs to prove he can do things all by himself. Born to overprotective father Marlin, Nemo has a battle for independence on his hands/fins, but when he finds himself trapped in a dentist’s aquarium he has to prove his abilities like never before.
2 Flounder
The Little Mermaid is one of the most-loved Disney movies of all time and Flounder is most definitely one of the best characters. Despite his name, this little fellow is not actually a Flounder but a tropical fish known as a juvenile Atlantic blue tang surgeonfish and is totally adorable. Best friends with mischievous mermaid Ariel, Flounder is a loyal companion and despite being scared out of his wits on a daily basis, he joins her on a daring quest to learn more about the human world.
3 Sebastian
A controlling crustacean with a cracking Caribbean accent, Sebastian also appears in The Little Mermaid and is the servant of King Triton. A loose tongued crab, suspicious of anything above the water, Sebastian does not skate around the issue of discipline when it comes to Ariel. Well-known for singing Under the Sea and Kiss de Girl, Sebastian is legendary and even survives becoming Ariel’s lunch at Eric’s house. Created solely for the Disney film, Sebastian was not one of the original characters from the Hans Christian Andersen story on which the movie is based, but is a humorous addition.
4 Oscar
A bluestreak cleaner wrasse from Dreamworks Animation Shark Tale, Oscar is a real cheeky chap voiced by popular American actor Will Smith. Mistakenly crowned the Shark Slayer following the death of Frankie, Oscar lives the high life and moves to the top of the reef to live in absolute luxury. With a manager, a new girlfriend and plenty of adoring fans, life is good for Oscar until he eventually confesses an anchor in fact killed Frankie and he is not a hero after all. Forced to give up his wealth, Oscar eventually reconciles his differences with the sharks and goes on to live an honest life.
5 Lenny
Also from Shark Tale, is the hilarious and sensitive great white shark Lenny. Son of criminally-inclined Don Lino (Robert De Niro), Lenny is expected to be a cold-blooded killer but instead is a kind-hearted vegetarian. When sent out with brother Frankie on a mission to be a proper shark, the chance arises for him to attack Oscar, but rather than hurt him he lets him escape infuriating his brother further. A gentle giant, Lenny goes against social conventions and is a real sweetie, even releasing a maggot from the end of a fishing line.
6 SpongeBob Squarepants
SpongeBob SquarePants is a fun-loving, positive thinking sea sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea. Star of the American animated television series of the same name, SpongeBob lives with his pet snail Gary next door to egotistical octopus Squidward Tentacles. Friends with many interesting characters including scuba-suit-wearing Sandy the Squirrel and employed by money-obsessed crab Eugene Krabs, SpongeBob lives an action-packed life in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom.
So, there you have it, a whole collection of some of the most memorable underwater creatures who’ll be much-loved for years to come. The imagination is an incredible thing and it is great to see some of the most beautiful inhabitants of the sea brought to life on screen — I wonder what they will come up with next?
