1 Baton Rouge
Baton Rouge is the capital of the state of Louisiana and is one of the top destinations in the state. There are a great many historical attractions in the city worth seeing, many having a lot to do with the history of the state of Louisiana and the Old South. Baton rouge is the farthest inland port on the Mississippi River. When these ships transporting goods reach the city, they unload and their cargoes proceed to other areas of the country by rail or truck. Ships could go farther upriver if it were not for the height of the old Huey Long Bridge that is too short to allow them to pass underneath.

2 Lafayette
The city of Lafayette sits on the Vermilion River and is an incredibly interesting part of the state of Louisiana. The city is known as t center of the Cajun culture that calls Louisiana home. The city is home to four colleges including the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, South Louisiana Community College, Louisiana Technical College, and Remington College. The original name of the city of Lafayette when it was founded in 1821 was Vermilionville.
3 Lake Charles
Lake Charles is the fifth largest city in the state of Louisiana. It is located on three bodies of water including Lake Charles, Prien Lake, and the Calcasieu River. The city is located in the southeastern corner of the state and is a major center for the petrochemical refining industry. When the city was incorporated in 1861, it went by the name of Charleston. Six years later, after the American Civil War had ended, the city officially changed its name to Lake Charles.

4 New Orleans
The city of New Orleans has a fascinating history and is one of the most important port cities in the United States of America. Before coming under the influence of the United States following the Louisiana Purchase, New Orleans had been governed by both the Spanish and the French. This influence shows to this day in various parts of the downtown New Orleans area. The first city council created in New Orleans was formed by the French prefect in charge of transferring the city to America following the Louisiana Purchase just weeks before the transfer was made.

The city of Shreveport is the third largest city in Louisiana and sits right on the Red River.
