6 Crucial Things to Do When Pulled Over for Drunk Driving

Driving while intoxicated is most definitely not a good idea. The road is a dangerous place. If people don’t follow the rules and regulations, and if they are not concentrated enough while they are behind the wheel, disasters are sure to happen. That is why each and every driver should be at the top if his or her game while operating a vehicle on the road.

However, every once in a while there comes an occasion where having an alcoholic beverage is simply inevitable. For instance, let’s say you have been a guest at a wedding of a very dear friend. Both you and your whole family were invited. You ate, you danced, you laughed and yes, you had a couple of drinks, but you most certainly didn’t get drunk. When the time comes for you and your family to go home, you went to your car and sat in the driver’s seat because you were fully capable of driving safely. And then, a couple of law enforcement officers stopped you for a routine check-up, you panicked a bit, they saw that, you took the test and presto – you got yourself a fine.

These situations happen, but most would agree that a fine, in the scenario mentioned above, is really not necessary. So, when such a situation happens, what to do? Well, take a look at the following piece of text and see for yourself.

So, when you realize you are getting pulled over:

1 Turn on your turn signal and slowly and calmly park the car near the side of the road.

2 Keep the hands on the wheel (in the 2 o’clock position). Most people either step out of the car, or they immediately start rummaging through the glove compartment in search of their documentation. NO! Avoid doing anything until the policeman comes by your window.

3 When he or she first speaks to you, you will be asked to show your license and registration. You should make sure that you are cool, calm and collected and that you get the required documentation form wherever it is you keep it, and hand it over to the policeman. While you are doing this, the law enforcement officer will be assessing your actions, so keep that in mind.

4 If he or she asks you something about where you were or have you been drinking, well, most people forget that YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT. How many times have you heard that sentence? In every action movie maybe? You should use that right in this situation. Just politely say that you do not want to discuss neither your previous whereabouts, nor your destination, and that you do not want to answer the question related to drinking.  This is important because, if you say the truth, you are “doomed” and if you lie and that doesn’t check out in court, you are also “doomed”. That’s just the way the law works.

5 If the officer asks you to perform a test, you should be aware that there are two kinds of tests. The first is the field sobriety test, and you have the right not to do this one. The second is the chemical test and this one you have to take. If you refuse to take the chemical test, in most cases, you license will be suspended for a significant amount of time, and you will have to pay a certain fine.

6 Last but not least, you should consult your lawyer. If you do get charged, your lawyer will be your best friend for the time being. That is why you should pick your lawyer carefully. Pick someone who has experience and who has several successfully “cracked” cases behind him or her.

To sum up, since we are facing an economic crisis and, frankly speaking, we need finances in order to keep up, having to pay a fine for doing something that is not that bad is not something that we need, right? So, take everything that you have read in the text above seriously and the next time the red and blue lights flashing  in your rearview mirror, be sure to follow the instructions.
