Driving a Vauxhall Corsa on the M1 at 90MPH is pretty fast. Driving a Supercar at 120MPH on a mile long straight, is something else. But before you get behind the wheel of one of these supercharged beasts, there are a few things you should know about how to drive a Supercar.
1 Know its power
The key to any Supercar, no matter what the make or model, is understanding what lies beneath the bonnet. Never forget that you’ll be putting a supercharged engine through its paces with enough horsepower to make the Grand National look like a My Little Pony tea party.
2 Brake with caution
You’ve not experienced an emergency stop until you’ve pressed the brake pedal of a Supercar. Most Supercars possess durable and fade-resistant, carbon-ceramic brakes. Mastering such awesome brakes would take years of practice and the lightest tap of the brake pedal will make you realise just why you’re wearing a safety belt. Handle with care.
3 Watch your handling & cornering
There’s no doubt that once behind the wheel of a Supercar you’ll feel completely obliged to put your foot firmly down. But there are a few things you should remember before you do. Supercars are heaver (or lighter in the case of the Ariel Atom) and will feel completely different to a road car, be it on a straight or curvy track. Because they remain so firmly planted on the tarmac cornering can seem more like a game than a challenge.
4 Don’t let fear get the better of you
There’s a good reason why they’re called Supercars. With so much power and acceleration it’s easy to feel anxious and intimidated. But don’t. It’s important that you command these cars or they’ll push you around. Always assert yourself on the track and be as confident in a Ferrari or Lamborghini as you would be in your own.
5 Enjoy
Enjoy your Supercar as it was built to be enjoyed. But enjoy it responsibly and with a bit of finesse. If you’re driving like Steve McQueen in a 1970s car chase, you’re not respecting the car, your instructors life or your own. This is a once in a lifetime experience, so sit back, breathe and enjoy the ride.
