At the Oaks Colliery in South Yorkshire, an explosion erupted as a new work area was being bored out. The coal dust explosion reportedly killed 388 workers. Shortly after this explosion on 12 December, another explosion took place on the 13th killing 27 additional workers. The Oaks Colliery would continue operating until 1960. In this time, the mine faced 17 more explosions.
