81972 Wankie Colliery accident (Zimbabwe, 426 casualties)

On June 6, 1972, in Rhodesia, or present day Zimbabwe, at the Wankie Colliery Disaster killed a tragic 426 people. The disaster was caused by a series of explosions at the number two mineshaft. Eventually, the main shaft of the mine was totally out of commission, which ended up trapping 400 mineworkers under the earth’s crust.
