1 Un Chien Andalou
Perhaps the goriest scene of all comes from the 1929 silent movie by Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel. They mightn’t have had all the special effects of later films, but the slicing through of the girl’s eyeball is nonetheless difficult to watch. Even the knowledge that it wasn’t a human eyeball but a calf’s that was used doesn’t make it any less grim.
Thanks to Dalí, this early 20th century eyeball slicing is as surreal as it is shocking.
