This was the first movie like it of its time. Not many people were willing to create movies about auto racing because the risks are very high in terms of people getting seriously injured. Tom Cruise actually drove the race car that was used in the movie, although not at record breaking speeds. Cruise was aloud to drive on the track doing 90 and then it was fast forwarded in the making to make it seem as if he went faster.
