These days social media and social networking cannot be ignored. The immense number of people that are actively making use of social network sites is staggering. In my inner circles I know far less people who don’t have a Facebook account than people who do.

There are many different ways to share your social activities online. We all know about Twitter and Facebook, but there are a whole lot more you can use for free and have fun online.

These are the 11 biggest social networking sites today

1 Facebook

Number of users: 1.2 billion (1,200,000,000)

Definitely the biggest, although I’m not sure what percentage is held up by fake users, Facebook is such a huge part of the lives of millions that it will probably dominate this list for many years to come.

Or will it?

A case study of Princeton University concluded that the number of users on Facebook will be declined by about 80% by 2017. They base their findings on “epidemiological models” so there is a calculable connection between user registration and abandonment of the site.

I guess we’ll have to see how this plays out. I don’t think there’s much for Facebook to worry about though, as people are more and more addicted to being connected to everyone at all times, it doesn’t seem like it will die out any time soon.

2 Twitter

Number of users: ~650 million (650,000,000)

Twitter: “the SMS of the internet”. I’m not an active Twitter user myself, even though I should use it more for my websites (like AllYouNeedIsLists), but even so I have about 5 or 6 different accounts. The number above is mentioned as “active users” here and there, but I guess that’s just a matter of perspective.

However, it cannot be denied that Twitter is huge and they have hundreds of millions of users to show for it. The short 140 character posts also make for quick reading and it’s a great platform for famous people like Barack Obama or Justin Bieber (or rather their marketing team) to post striking short messages.

3 Qzone (QQ空间)

Number of users: 620 million (620,000,000)

Okay I said you should check these sites out, but for Qzone that won’t be much use if you don’t speak Chinese. China, which houses 1.3 billion people (almost the same number of Facebook users), apparently has a law for people to register for an account at a certain age. Approximately 50% of the Chinese population seems to be registered on their Facebook-equivalent and the numbers are rising fast!

4 Google+

Number of users: 540 million (540,000,000)

Personally I favor Google+ over Facebook, even though I don’t make much use of either. The layout, graphics and overall feel of trustworthiness (which is probably just an illusion) makes this the number 1 for me. However, the numbers don’t lie which means the search engine monster only has about half the amount compared to Facebook.

Maybe not as many bots?

5 Sina Weibo

Number of users: 480 million (480,000,000)

Another Chinese social networking site that is comparable to both Twitter and Facebook. It’s a microblogging platform with a huge amount of users, even though Weibo didn’t exist before August 2009. That is a great accomplishment!

6 Tagged

Number of users: 300 million (300,000,000)

Tagged.com is a so-called social discovery platform where you can meet new friends, find cool online content, play games and more. It was originally created as a place for kids (anyone below 18) to roam around, but eventually they figured they could tap into a much bigger audience by allowing people of any age since 2006.

7 Linkedin

Number of users: 277 million (277,000,000)

I bet most of us who ever wanted to find a new job or had stuff to sell worldwide has registered for a Linkedin account. This business-equivalent of a social network has been a success from the first month it started back in 2003.

Although I’m not a premium subscriber, it seems many others are: Linkedin’s 2013 revenue from premium subscriptions (which is “just” 20% of the total revenue) was $305 million. *Gawk*

8 VKontakte (VK.com)

Number of users: 250 million (250,000,000)

VK.com offers a similar social experience as Facebook, only this platform is completely in Russian. With a quarter of a billion users, probably all Russian-speaking people, it’s responsible for a major share of Russian internet usage with about 55 million daily users.

Then 22-year-old Pavel Durov founded VK in 2006 with his brother, he sold his 12% share earlier this year to a big Russian telecom company.

9 Renren (人人网)

Number of users: 200 million+ (200,000,000)

Another Chinese social network, Renren is just like QZone and Sina Weibo hard to scan in terms of current statistics. Mid-2013 they had around 194 million active users, which should make it 200+ today (I think). Renren is another one of those “Facebook clones”, although I still think that’s not a truly accurate name for it (considering sites like Friendster, MySpace and other localized worldwide variants existed a couple years before Facebook).

10 Instagram

Number of users: 200 million+ (200,000,000)

This social network is all about sharing your story through photos and videos. Selfies, portraits, random shots, funny pictures, your daughter blowing out the birthday cake, it’s all possible.

The huge and instant success of Instagram (it was only launched October 2010) was celebrated with a $1 billion purchase by Facebook. Since than it has grown even further, with about 23% of new signups in 2013. SHABANG!

11 Orkut

Number of users: 200 million+ (200,000,000)

Although it’s owned by Google and not necessarily bound to a specific country or language, Orkut is mostly popular in Brazil and India. The overall scheme is the same as social sites like Facebook or Google+. Why other countries avoid it? Beats me! Maybe it’s the silly name.

Honorable mention

Okay, this is blatant spam, but now that I have this list of social networking sites live I’d like to take the opportunity to promote my new website Memstories.com. It’s a new social experience based around the age-old question “Where were you when..”.

Usually discussions like “where were you on 9/11?” or “my grandfather fought with the Allies on D-Day” are only held in the pub, at parties or just face-to-face, but Memstories aims to make this a broader platform.

You can share your personal stories about those experiences that are imprinted in your brain to great detail or you can honor your grandfather for his actions during World War II. You can discuss anything from terrorist attacks, to sports or music events, the Oscars and so much more.

Why don’t you go have a look? You can post your story without registering!
