About the author: Paul from Mauritius Holidays Tips brings you the right holiday information if you are planning a trip to the tropical island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean.

Mauritius is a popular destination for holidays. Warm weather, sandy beaches, turquoise lagoon, everything a holidaymaker could wish for to relax in style. There are a few things to be careful of and if you follow these 5 precautions, your trip to this tropical island will be a big success.

1 Protection against the sun

With warm weather comes the risk of over-exposure to the sun. Too many holidaymakers, as soon as they are off the plane from their cold country step onto the beach to lie down for hours in the midday sun, try to get a tan as soon as possible. This is a recipe for disaster and your skin will end up red and even worst, you could get sunburnt and in the long-term, skin cancer. So do the right thing and cover up yourself with sun lotion to block the sun’s intense rays under the tropics. Wear a hat as well on the beach during midday, especially at the beginning of your trip. Your tan will come gradually over the days and will stay for longer.

2 Protection against mosquitoes

The price to pay for Mauritius holidays is the presence of voracious mosquitoes. Locals say they seem to like fresh blood more than anything else so if this is true, you can be sure they will be targeting you. What can you do? There are anti-mosquitoes sprays and creams that you can apply on you when you go out. If you go for a swim, you will have to reapply them. At home, you can burn a special incense that repels mosquitoes. It is best to do this in a open room. When sleeping at night, use a small electrical device that will heat up a tablet which emits a smell to repel mosquitoes.

3 Protection against diseases

There is no health concern to worry about when going to Mauritius. And despite the mosquitoes, there is no occurrence of malaria. However, when travelling to far-flung destinations, it is wise to be well-prepared. If you are flying from Europe, you will fly over Africa and should the plane have to make any emergency stop, it pays to be well-prepared through the right vaccination to land in Africa. Your doctor will be best able to advise you of the right vaccinations.

4 Beware of monkeys

Wild monkeys are widespread in the high grounds of Mauritius within the countryside. They are not dangerous and don’t attack people. They have become very familiar with people who often throw them food or just leave their litter behind. As a result, they can get very close to tourists and some people try to touch them. Remember that these are wild animals and can be unpredictable. If a female monkey has children with her, she may get very aggressive if people come to close. Monkeys have sharp teeth!

5 Get a car

This one may be more of a recommendation than a precaution to take but this could be a determining factor in making your trip a success. Many tourist attractions are out of the way, far from towns. The only public transport available in Mauritius is the bus; there are no trains or trams. Buses will only run between towns and villages where there are many people travelling, so that will exclude most attractions that are mostly for tourists. You will want to have your independent means of transport so you can go where you want when you want without having to worry about the last bus. You have a choice between hiring a car and taking a taxi every time. In the long run, taxis may be an expensive option but if you go out at night in restaurants, clubs or bars, you will be pleased to have a taxi to take you safely home after you’ve had too much to drink.

So follow these few tips and recommendations and you will have all the ingredients there for a great travel experience.
